It’s difficult to define New York in one sweeping paragraph.  Likewise, it’s difficult to define these New York images and expect anything more than an impression. However, John Steinbeck, American author came close:

“New York is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal, its politics are used to frighten children, its traffic is madness, its competition is murderous. But there is one thing about it: once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no place else is good enough.”

New York is an island of chaos and pleasures, sometimes ungodly pleasures, and limitless reward and hopelessness. There are Blacks, Arabs, Whites, Christians, and sinners thrown together in a city that is nonchalant about their existence. A city that shrugs at its citizens but rewards success, any success.

The city is defined by the people who occupy the streets, restaurants, and churches. Included below are images of those people from that time of innocence when we thought innocence existed.  Black and white images of residents, children, couples and a drunk.
